China opposes G20 summit in Jammu and Kashmir

Beijing: India plans to hold next year’s G20 summit in Jammu and Kashmir, but China has strongly opposed it. In a tone similar to that of its close ally Pakistan, China underlined that the parties concerned should avoid the “politics” of the issue.

“China’s policy on Kashmir is clear,” said Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry. This issue is already present in India and Pakistan. An appropriate settlement must be reached in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions and bilateral agreements.

Asked whether China would join the G20 as a member, Lijian said it would be considered whether to attend. Pakistan had on June 25 opposed the G20’s proposal to hold a meeting in Jammu and Kashmir.
