Penalty for speeding, accident for speeding

Speed limit boards at few places in ghat area on 'Drutgati'

Pimpri Chinchwad:The Pune-Mumbai Expressway’s ghat section is facing challenges with speed limit signs being placed only at a few locations. As a result, drivers are forced to suddenly reduce their speed when they encounter these signs, but it becomes difficult to control the vehicle with vehicles coming from behind. This situation often leads to accidents. Drivers are also facing fines for violating traffic rules.

Speed Limits and Challenges
The speed limit for light vehicles is set at 100 km/h, while for other vehicles, it is 80 km/h. However, sudden speed limit signs showing 60 or 40 km/h in the ghat areas make it hard for drivers to reduce speed. If drivers do not lower their speed, they are penalized with fines of ₹2,000 for breaking traffic rules. On the other hand, if they reduce their speed, accidents occur due to vehicles from behind colliding with them.

Problems with Sign Placement
The placement of speed limit signs near cameras and at only a few locations makes it difficult for drivers to anticipate speed limits, leading to rule violations and penalties. Drivers are demanding that more speed limit signs and digital boards be installed throughout the ghat section to ensure better compliance and safety.

Driver’s Demand for Revised Speed Limits
Drivers are requesting the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to conduct a survey of the ghat route and adjust the speed limits accordingly. They are also requesting an increase in speed limits to avoid unnecessary fines.

Penalty Details
If drivers violate the speed limit in the ghat areas, they are fined ₹2,000.

Responsibility for Setting Speed Limits
The speed limits are decided by the MSRDC and the Additional General Police of the Traffic Department after surveying all the vehicles on the road.

Risk of Accidents
Suddenly reducing speed on steep descents in the ghat areas is a significant factor contributing to accidents.
