Municipal Elections to Be Held Based on Four-Member Ward Structure; State Government Issues Orders for Ward Delimitation

       Pimpri Chinchwad | The preparations for local self-government elections have gained momentum, and the administrative process has begun. Against this backdrop, the state government has issued orders to municipal corporations, municipalities, and nagar panchayats for ward delimitation.

The government has issued orders regarding the ward structure of Class A, B, and C municipal corporations in the state. This includes major municipal bodies like Pune, Nagpur, Thane, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Kalyan-Dombivli. Elections for local self-governing bodies had been pending for the past three to four years. Following the Supreme Court’s directive to conduct these elections, the state has now initiated the process by issuing orders for ward delimitation.

Municipal corporations where elections are due have now received directives to commence the ward structuring process. Clear instructions have been provided to the administration on how to structure the wards and what population criteria to follow.

While the new ward structuring orders have been issued for all municipal corporations in Maharashtra, Mumbai will hold elections based on its existing ward structure, consisting of 227 single-member wards. For other corporations like Pune, Nagpur, Thane, Nashik, Navi Mumbai, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and others, wards will consist of four members each.


Classification of Municipal Corporations:

  • Class A Municipal Corporations: Pune, Nagpur

  • Class B Municipal Corporations: Thane, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad

  • Class C Municipal Corporations: Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Kalyan-Dombivli

  • Class D Municipal Corporations: Wards may have 3 to 5 members

In Class D municipal corporations, the general rule is to form four-member wards. However, if not feasible, one ward may have three or five members, or two wards may have three members each. The following municipal corporations fall under Class D:
Amravati, Ahilyanagar, Akola, Kolhapur, Solapur, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Mira-Bhayander, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Jalgaon, Nanded, Dhule, Malegaon, Latur, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Panvel, Ichalkaranji, and Jalna.


Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation 2017 Election Results

Voting was held for a total of 128 seats in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). A total of 774 candidates contested these 128 seats. In that election, the BJP defeated the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and gained a clear majority.

Party-wise Seat Distribution in 2017 PCMC Elections:

  • BJP: 78 seats

  • NCP: 35 seats

  • Shiv Sena: 9 seats

  • MNS: 1 seat

  • Others: 5 seats
