  • Incident at Gorewada Zoo

Nagpur: A newborn cub of Lee Waghini at Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoo has died after being bitten by the same tooth. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon. Lee Waghini, who was brought from Maharajbag to Gorewada, gave birth to a pup at around 4 pm. After that, the zoo administration came to know that the puppy had died due to a tick bite while picking it up. A team of expert doctors from Maharashtra Fisheries and Animal Science University along with veterinarians from the zoo were present at the zoo. The specialist doctors are working to find out if there are any more chicks in her womb after the delivery has stopped late at night.

For the past two years, Lee and Rajkumar have been trying to breed a pair of tigers at the Gorewada Zoo. Due to Lee Waghini’s age, these efforts were hampered by the expected success. Tigers are usually 10 to 12 years old and Lee Waghin is currently 11 years old. For the past month, Lee Waghini has been kept separate from the prince and special arrangements have been made for her pregnancy.

A special baby cave has been set up in her night shelter for the piglets to grow naturally. In addition to temperature and light control system, the cave was provided with rubber mats, grass mattresses and coolers. Special CCTV cameras were installed to monitor the natural behavior of the tigers without any change. The tiger gave birth to a baby on Tuesday afternoon. The Gorewada zoo administration has said that the cub died due to tooth decay while picking it up. At this time, the director of the zoo S. S. Dr. Bhagwat, Deputy Director, Gorewada Wildlife Research and Training Center V. M. Dr. Dhoot, a veterinary specialist at the Veterinary University. M. S. Dr. Patil, the veterinarian of the zoo. Mayur Pavshe and Dr. Sujit Kolangath, General Curator Deepak Sawant, Biologist Shubham Chhapekar and other officials and staff of the zoo were present.

Four newborn chicks killed themselves

Earlier, Lee Waghin was once pregnant with a tiger named Sahebrao in 2016. At that time she had given birth to four puppies. However, since she did not have a motherly feeling at that time, she killed all the puppies in no time. In most carnivores, which are separated from the mother at an early age, such symptoms appear in the first calf, experts said. Meanwhile, a special incubator has been set up at the zoo to take care of the chicks if they do not accept them this time as well.
