Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde’s attempt at ‘damage control’? Assistance announced for flood victims in Assam

Mumbai: The state is currently in an unprecedented political situation. About 40 Shiv Sena MLAs have challenged Uddhav Thackeray, who won the Assembly elections under his leadership. Shiv Sena rebel MLAs, including leader and minister Eknath Shinde, have been living in Guwahati in Assam for the past few days. Leaders in Maharashtra were criticized for having fun in a five-star hotel in Assam when the floods hit. Against this backdrop, Eknath Shinde has made a big announcement.

“All Shiv Sena MLAs as well as allied MLAs have decided to contribute Rs 51 lakh to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to help the flood-hit brothers in Assam,” Eknath Shinde said on his Twitter handle. Meanwhile, MLA Mangesh Kudalkar, who is currently staying in Guwahati after the building collapse in Mumbai’s Kurla area yesterday, had announced financial assistance to the injured and relatives of the deceased.

What exactly is the situation in Assam?

Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in Assam. The ASDMA has said that the rainfall in May and June this year was above average in the previous states as compared to the previous few years. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Meghalaya received 172 per cent more rainfall in the last one week on June 16. Assam received 100 per cent more rainfall and Arunachal Pradesh received 28 per cent more rainfall than the average. More than 5 million people have been affected by the floods in 32 of Assam’s 36 districts.
