Mumbai municipal council ward structure: blow to Shinde-Fadnavis government, big relief to Uddhav Thackeray

Mumbai: The Supreme Court has slapped the Shinde-BJP government on the reorganization of wards in Mumbai in the wake of the Mumbai Municipal Elections. Ward reshuffling in Mumbai has been stayed by the Supreme Court. In Mumbai, the decision to hold elections according to 227 wards has been postponed. This decision of the court has given relief to Uddhav Thackeray. Because, the Thackeray government’s decision of 236 wards was changed as soon as the Shinde-BJP government came. However, now the court has stayed the decision of the Shinde government (Supreme Court on BMC Election 2022).

As soon as the Shinde-BJP government came into existence, the 227 ward-wise elections were held in 2017. An ordinance was passed by the Shinde government to hold elections in the same manner. Earlier, the Mahavikas Aghadi government had taken a decision regarding this ward reorganization and decided to hold elections by demolishing 236 wards. After this decision, there was a transfer of power in the state and the Shinde-Fadnavis government came into existence. This decision was changed as soon as the government came. After that, this decision was challenged in the Supreme Court by the Uddhav Thackeray group. A petition was filed. Giving a decision on the same petition, the Supreme Court has stayed the decision giving relief to Thackeray.

The decision was canceled by the Shinde government

During the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in the state, the ward structure in Mumbai was increased by nine from 227 to 236. BJP had opposed it by taking an aggressive stand against it. At that time, the BJP had also alleged that the increased nine wards were for the benefit of the Shiv Sena. The nine wards that had been extended by the Shinde government were cancelled. The decision was taken by the Shinde government informing that the number of wards increased by the Mavia government was done in an illegal manner and these wards were cancelled. Therefore, the new ward structure was canceled and the number of wards determined as per 2011 census in 2017 was retained. Shiv Sena challenged this decision in the Supreme Court.

According to this draft plan, there will be a total of 236 wards in Mumbai Municipal Corporation
