Houses for mill workers in ‘PM Awas’ ?, an attempt by the state housing department

Mumbai : Demand for housing for mill workers in or near Mumbai. For this, the state government has implemented schemes to provide houses in Mumbai metropolis. Efforts are also being made to provide houses to these workers through Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The housing department has taken steps for this. However, as the scheme is a central government scheme, the houses will be given only to the mill workers who meet the criteria.

Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, housing projects are being implemented in Mumbai metropolitan area. Out of this, about 70,000 houses will be available. The role of the government is that if the mill workers are also included in this scheme, they will get huge benefits. The central government is implementing this scheme with a view to provide permanent housing to every family by 2022. The Center has appointed MHADA as the co-ordinating body for its implementation. In the Mumbai metropolitan area, some private developers, including MHADA’s Konkan Mandal, have started construction of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

MHADA’s Konkan Mandal will build about 10,000 houses in Kalyan, Shirdhon under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. About 75,000 houses are being built in Vasai under Suraksha Smart City. Out of this, in Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, 44,000 houses will be provided for low and very low income group through lottery. At the same time, 8,000 houses will be constructed at Wangani under this scheme.

Criteria must be met

The housing department is struggling to include mill workers in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. However, this scheme is subsidized by the Central Government. Therefore, senior officials of MHADA clarified that the beneficiaries need to fulfill the criteria of this scheme.
