Home Minister launches ‘Jivhala’ loan scheme for prison inmates

Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil on Sunday (Jan. 1) inaugurated the ‘Jivhala’ loan scheme developed by Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank for prisoners.

Atul Chandra Kulkarni, Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prison Reform Services, Vidyadhar Anaskar, President of Maharashtra State Co-operative Council and Administrator of Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank; Yogesh Desai, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Ajit Deshmukh was present.

Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil said that many inmates in prisons are domestic workers, so the state government has decided to provide loans to their children for education expenses, hospital expenses and other reasons. The purpose of this scheme is to facilitate the livelihood, health, education of children and rehabilitation of prisoners after the period of punishment. The inmates will be able to repay the loan from the income earned from the prison. The plan is to help Bandi and his family reconcile.

Although the loan disbursement scheme has a limit of Rs. Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil suggested that planning should be done for implementation of Yerawada Jail Loan Scheme in all prisons in the state.

Inspector General of Prison Correctional Services Shri. Kulkarni said loans have been sanctioned to 222 male detainees and 7 female detainees. This will be the first loan disbursement initiative in the country. Following the success of Yerawada Jail, the scheme will be extended to other jails in the state. This is a very important initiative for Bandya.

Mr. Anaskar informed about the loan scheme. Debt checks were distributed to the inmates at the jail.
