GST on food means British-style levy: Chetan Bendre

Pimpri: The British were clever.. they started raising taxes on salt to fill the coffers. Taxes were imposed on Swadeshi, textiles, food grains to provide concessions to British industrialists. In the freedom movement, people opposed the looting of the British. The Modi government implemented the Goods and Services Tax (GST) across the country on July 1, 2017 to make the taxation system transparent. While implementing the GST taxation system in 2017, the Center had promised not to levy GST on food grains.

However, now GST has been imposed on food grains and food. The government has imposed 5% GST on all essential commodities like food grains, milk, milk products, curd, paneer, buttermilk etc. The Ministry of Finance is emptying the pockets of the people by setting a magnifying glass for tax hike. Aam Aadmi Party working president Chetan Bendre has criticized this government in a letter saying that it is doing more legal looting than the British rule.

Prime Minister Modi, who promised a good day to the entire country, has continuously increased central excise duty and has increased the tax on petrol, diesel and domestic gas in the last seven years, which has led to a huge increase in the inflation of essential commodities. 1.41 Lakh Crores was collected by the government in May 2022. Every time the government increases taxes and gives concessions worth billions of rupees to the corporate tycoons, the common man wants to earn such crores of rupees through 5% GST on daily necessities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaram should make essential goods completely tax-free, the new GST tax hike is likely to increase inflation by 15 percent. Because manufacturers, sellers in the supply chain will keep maximum prices and monthly retail grocery costs will increase by Rs 400 to Rs 500, the paper said.
