Mumbai : The Legislative Assembly passed a bill to amend the law to elect the mayor directly from the people in the Nagar Panchayat and Municipal Council elections. State Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced the same.
Meanwhile, I have never asked for work and Eknath Shinde has never rejected that work, so former Water Resources Minister Jayant Patil opposed this bill while expressing his belief that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will reconsider this bill for ‘direct mayor’ election.
There is a high possibility that this bill will cause a lot of confusion in the functioning of the municipality. There are many municipalities where the mayor belongs to one party and the majority of members belong to the opposition party. Jayant Patil has also said that many decisions are not made due to this, even if efforts are made, those decisions are not implemented and the work of the municipality is stopped due to which malpractices will increase.
