After 38 years, the mortal remains of martyred jawan Chandrashekhar Harbola will be taken to Haldani in Uttarakhand state.
On March 29, 1984, Operation Meghdoot was carried out in Siachen. Herbola died a heroic death during this campaign. 19 soldiers buried in blizzard in Siachen. The bodies of 14 of them were taken out. However, the bodies of five soldiers were not found then. The Indian Army then informed Harbola’s family that Chandrasekhar was martyred. After that, Harbola was cremated by his family as per Pahari tradition.
This year, the ice has started melting in the glacier in Siachen. At that time, the Indian Army started re-searching the soldiers buried under the snow in the Meghdut campaign. In a last ditch effort at that time, the bones of Lance Nayak Chandrasekhar Harbola were found in an old bunker in the glacier. The Indian Army identified Chandrasekhar on the basis of the disc. The number given by the army (4164584) was written on it.
A heroic death at the age of 28
Lance Nayak Chandrasekhar Harbola was only 28 years old when he died in 1984. At that time, his eldest daughter was eight years old. So, the little girl was only 4 years old. Harbola’s wife was 27 years old.
Cremation in a state funeral
Chandrasekhar’s body was buried in the snow in Siachen for 38 years now. His body will be brought to his residence today on August 15. Also, his body will be cremated in official ceremony.
His wife could not even see his face
Chandrasekhar Harbola’s wife is now 65 years old. After the death of Chandrasekhar, he maintained himself with great courage. The only sorrow is that she could not have the last darshan of her husband. Harbola’s elder daughter is now 48 years old and was very young at the time of her father’s death. She says that I don’t even remember his face.
