America:-The new U.S. President, Donald Trump, might grant recognition to Somaliland, a breakaway region from Somalia. In 1991, civil war broke out in Somalia, and a group opposing the Somali government managed to secure the northern part of the country along with the Aden Gulf, declaring it as an independent nation under the name of Somaliland. However, this country has yet to receive international recognition. The people living in Somaliland manage their affairs independently, but the world still does not acknowledge its sovereignty. However, recognizing the political and geographical significance of Somaliland, several countries, including Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have been strengthening ties with the region in recent years.
According to a report by Semafor, the U.S. is now ready to recognize Somaliland as an independent nation. With Donald Trump becoming the new president of the United States, this development is gaining momentum. However, if the U.S. recognizes Somaliland as a separate country, it could complicate the relations between the U.S. and other African nations.
Joshua Meserve, an analyst at the Hudson Institute, said in an interview with Semafor that Somaliland should be recognized as an independent country because it has shown that it can manage its affairs independently. Therefore, the people of Somaliland are unlikely to return to Somalia.
According to Yinka Adegoke of Somaliland, the Trump administration is prepared to grant Somaliland the status of an independent nation. In exchange, the U.S. could benefit strategically and militarily. For the U.S., recognizing Somaliland could serve as an advantage in its competition with China, making it easier to compete with China on a global scale. If Somaliland is recognized as a separate country, the U.S. might gain several benefits from this recognition, further helping in its competition with China.
