Nigdikars Angry Over Proposed Changes to Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi Route!

Locals Demand No Interference in Centuries-Old Tradition
Pimpri Chinchwad | The 340th annual Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi procession is set to be celebrated this year with great enthusiasm. The palkhi, which begins its journey from Dehu village to Pandharpur on June 18, 2025, is scheduled to reach Nigdi Gaothan on June 19. However, due to the ongoing metro construction between Nigdi and Pimpri, the administration’s attempt to alter the palkhi route has sparked widespread outrage among the local citizens.

“If there’s any attempt to change the Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi route, citizens will take to the streets. This is a matter of our identity,” warned Sachin Kalbhor, BJP city secretary, issuing a stern warning of protest against the proposed changes.

📌 Interference in Tradition?

Due to the ongoing metro work near the Bhakti Shakti Flyover, plans are being made to change the traditional palkhi route. A joint meeting between Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and the City Police Department suggested rerouting the palkhi via Shri Krishna Temple instead of the Bhakti Shakti Flyover. While the spiritual celebration of the palkhi is beginning with great devotion, the administrative decision has deeply hurt local sentiments.

Maintaining the tradition, route, and devotion associated with the palkhi is a collective responsibility. Hence, there is a strong demand from locals that the palkhi follow its traditional route via Nigdi Gaothan, Maruti Temple, and Nigdi Bus Stop.

🙏 A Tradition Passed Down Through Generations

The Maruti Temple in Nigdi Gaothan has been the traditional resting place for the palkhi. From there, it proceeds to Akurdi Vitthal Temple via Nigdi Bus Stop. This route holds a centuries-old tradition, where every year, warkaris (devotees) are welcomed with food offerings, services, and greeting ceremonies organized by locals.

⚠️ A Blow to Sentiments

Local residents, mandals (community groups), and warkari devotees believe that the opportunity to see the palkhi has been a cherished tradition for years. The religious and emotional connection of devotees is deeply rooted in this route. Locals assert that instead of changing the route, administrative planning should ensure smooth proceedings despite ongoing work.

👥 Citizens’ Demands

  • Retain the original palkhi route:
Bhakti Shakti Flyover > Nigdi Gaothan > Maruti Temple > Nigdi Bus Stop > Akurdi Vitthal Temple

  • Ensure alternative arrangements to carry out metro work smoothly without disturbing the route.

  • Respect the faith and sentiments of the warkaris.

  • Local representatives should intervene and resolve the issue.
