Delhi’s Third Ring Road Project Likely to Open by August: Here Are the Full Details

The Rs 8,000-crore project, which is set to halve the travel time between Outer Delhi and parts of the NCR to IGIA, spans 74 km.
According to officials, this road will bring Chandigarh closer to Gurgaon and Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), and enhance connectivity between Delhi and neighboring states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
From August onwards, traveling from Outer Delhi to IGI Airport will become much easier. The Central Government’s ambitious Urban Extension Road (UER)-II project is 95% complete, and the entire project is expected to be finished in the next two months.
This ₹8,000-crore, 74-km long project will reduce travel time from Outer Delhi and various parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) to IGI Airport by half. Officials stated, “The project will reduce traffic congestion, save fuel, cut pollution, and boost connectivity between Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. It will also offer direct road connectivity between Sonipat and Gurgaon.”
This project was initially planned as Delhi’s third Ring Road under the Delhi Master Plan 2021. Later, it was declared a National Highway and is being developed in five phases. Of these, three phases (Packages 1, 2, and 3) are within Delhi, while the remaining parts are in Haryana.
Delhi currently has two ring roads – the Inner and Outer Ring Roads. The objective of this third Ring Road is to reduce traffic on these existing roads and improve connectivity across Outer, North, Northwest, West, and Southwest Delhi.
The expressway starts from NH-44 at Alipur and ends at the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on NH-48 near Mahipalpur, passing through the industrial areas of Outer Delhi such as Bawana, Rohini, Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh, and Dwarka — forming a semi-circular ring, officials explained.
The route will also serve as a direct link from Bahadurgarh in Haryana to Delhi’s Najafgarh, as well as to the Dwarka Expressway and Gurgaon. It will also connect the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways, aiming to ease traffic snarls.
Officials said, “This is one of Delhi’s most ambitious projects and it will connect Outer and South Delhi, particularly the rural belts… The project will benefit underdeveloped areas such as Najafgarh, Mundka, Karala, Alipur, and Bawana by providing quicker access to major destinations like South Delhi, Noida, and Faridabad, and improve links to major highways like NH-48.”
The project is being jointly developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
