Extreme levels of rainfall over the country; 131 deaths

New Delhi: With the onset of monsoon, torrential rains have begun in many parts of the country. Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in many parts of the country, with at least 131 people killed in landslides in some parts of the country. The torrential rains have disrupted life here and the people are suffering.

The cyclone has created havoc in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. As a result, the Union government has promised full assistance to all the states and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that a Union team will be sent to the flood-hit areas of Assam and Meghalaya to assess the damage. The center stands firmly behind the people of this area.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 11 deaths were reported in the state on Monday, out of which eight deaths occurred in 32 flood-hit districts. In the other five districts, people with two children are missing.

Above average rainfall
The ASDMA has said that the rainfall in May and June this year is above average as compared to last few years. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Meghalaya received 172 per cent more rainfall than normal in the last one week on June 16. Assam received 100 per cent more rainfall and Arunachal Pradesh received 28 per cent more rainfall than average. In Assam, 47,72,140 people have been affected by the floods in 32 of the 36 districts. The death toll rose to 82 after 11 more people were killed, according to the ASDMA bulletin.
