Kanpur: A shocking incident reminiscent of the plot from the Bollywood film “Drishyam” has come to light in Kanpur. A woman, missing for four months, was the focus of an extensive police investigation that had yielded no leads until now. The suspect in the case had also been on the run, eluding capture by the authorities.

Arrest of Suspect Reveals Gruesome Details

On Saturday, police arrested a gym trainer, identified as Vimal Soni (35), who is accused of murdering the woman and burying her body near the club adjacent to the District Magistrate’s residence in Kanpur. Vimal had been on the run since June and was reportedly working in a hotel in Punjab. Following the arrest, police successfully recovered the body of the 32-year-old victim, bringing clarity to this disturbing case. The incident was reported by the Indian Express.

Timeline of Events

According to police reports, the woman was last seen on June 24, when she visited the gym, after which she disappeared. Her husband had filed an FIR against Vimal Soni, leading to the investigation. DCP Shravan Kumar stated, “The investigation faced challenges in locating Vimal because he was not using his phone or making any financial transactions. Recently, he contacted his family, which helped us track him down.”

Multistate Investigation Efforts

To apprehend the suspect, multiple teams were dispatched to Delhi, Pune, Agra, Gwalior, and Punjab. It was later discovered that Vimal had lived in Mahoba for some time before relocating to Punjab, where he maintained minimal contact with hotel staff and owners. The breakthrough came when he reached out to his family in Kanpur.

Confession and Investigation Continues

Initially, the suspect claimed he had disposed of the woman’s body in the Ganges, but he later admitted to burying it at the Officers Club on VIP Road. Under the supervision of Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Harish Chander, the forensic team excavated the site and recovered the body. During interrogation, Vimal confessed to having a relationship with the victim, but an argument broke out when he learned of his upcoming arranged marriage. In a fit of rage, he attacked her, ultimately leading to her death. The police are continuing their investigation into this tragic case.
