Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against former state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. He is facing major charges of conspiracy to commit a crime. Two of his accomplices are also named in the chargesheet. The chargesheet has been filed in a special CBI court.

As the Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh had demanded a ransom of Rs 100 crore, an allegation made by the then Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh. He also claimed that he had written a similar letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The court directed a CBI inquiry after Singh took the matter to the high court. The CBI has registered a case on April 21, 2021. Later, it came to light that money was misappropriated in this case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Anil Deshmukh, his personal secretary Sanjeev Palande and his assistant Kundan Shinde. The CBI has since remanded the three in custody from the ED. The chargesheet was filed on Thursday.

According to sources, the chargesheet against Deshmukh, along with Palande and Shinde, includes conspiracy to commit Rs 100 crore from Mumbai bar owners, embezzlement and misappropriation of that amount. The chargesheet includes a 49-page indictment of the provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Prevention of Corruption and Corruption Act. Anil Deshmukh, who is lodged in Arthur Road Jail on various charges, has denied the allegations in various previous hearings. At the same time, he is currently undergoing medical treatment in his cell.
