Air Quality Deteriorates in Pune Due to Diwali Fireworks

Fireworks Cause Spike in Air Pollution

Pune: The air quality in Pune and its suburbs has significantly deteriorated due to the firework displays during Diwali celebrations. Certain areas have recorded hazardous air quality levels, leading to respiratory issues and potential health problems for residents.

Pollution Levels Reach Dangerous Thresholds

An increase in particulate matter has compromised air quality, with fireworks and construction activities contributing to the degradation. Following the Lakshmi Puja celebrations on Friday, air quality levels in the city surged past 115 on the Air Quality Index (AQI). According to air quality standards, an AQI of 50 or below is considered safe, while levels between 51 and 100 can be somewhat concerning. An index of 101 to 200 indicates moderate pollution that may cause respiratory issues in children and the elderly, whereas levels between 201 and 300 are classified as unhealthy for all. An AQI above 300 signals severe health risks.

Health Concerns Persist Post-Celebration

The fireworks set off during Lakshmi Puja produced a significant amount of smoke, which continued to impact air quality on Saturday. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board revealed alarming AQI levels in various locations: 254 in Shivajinagar, 174 in Bhumkar Nagar, 298 near Savitribai Phule Pune University, 209 on Karve Road, 281 in Hadapsar, 154 in Lohgaon’s MHADA Colony, and 196 in Panchavati.

Residents are urged to remain cautious, particularly those with pre-existing health conditions, as the adverse effects of this pollution could linger for days.
