Jimmy Carter:Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away on Sunday at the age of 100. He was the 39th President of the United States. Carter had a special connection with a village in Haryana, India. During his visit to India, the village was named “Carterpuri” in his honor.
Carter became president in 1977 after defeating Gerald Ford. He served as the U.S. President from 1977 to 1981, having been elected from the Democratic Party. He had been ill for some time. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. During his presidency, he laid the foundation for U.S. relations with the Middle East. Carter was born on October 1, 1924, and he also served as the Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975.
Jimmy Carter’s Special Connection with a Village in Haryana
Carter was the third U.S. President to visit India. During his trip, he signed a joint declaration with then-Prime Minister Morarji Desai, which marked the beginning of a new phase in India-U.S. relations. On his visit to India, Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, visited the village of Daulatpur Nasirabad in Haryana, located about an hour from New Delhi, on January 3, 1978. Carter’s mother, Lillian, had worked as a health volunteer with the Peace Corps in this village during the late 1960s. After Carter’s visit and his connection with the village, the villagers honored him by renaming the village “Carterpuri.”
Carter Known for His Philanthropic Work
After leaving the presidency, Carter founded the “Carter Center,” an organization focused on promoting election transparency, supporting human rights, and strengthening healthcare. Despite battling health issues for many years, Carter remained involved in humanitarian work. In 2016, he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer but continued his humanitarian efforts despite his illness.
