Increasing Parental Preference for English Medium Schools in Mumbai Municipal Corporation

Admissions for New Year: Admission of 10 thousand students last year

Mumbai: There is a growing preference among parents in Mumbai for English medium schools over Marathi medium schools, and for this, the Municipal Corporation has started an online admission process again this year. According to Education Officer Ramesh Kankal, more than 10,000 students had enrolled in the Mumbai Public Schools of the Municipal Corporation last year.

The enrollment numbers in Marathi and Hindi medium schools under the Municipal Corporation in Mumbai are steadily declining. Even parents from slum areas now expect their children to receive education in English medium schools. Accordingly, the Municipal Corporation has started 18 schools under the CBSE board, along with one each under the IB, ICSE, and IGCSE boards.

The Municipal Corporation has a total of 1,148 schools across all mediums in Mumbai, educating about 347,000 students. However, the online admission process for English medium schools under other boards has now been started. This year, the process will be open from January 1 to 15, 2025. Education Officer Kankal has urged parents to cooperate in ensuring that more students enroll in these 21 schools.

Highest Admissions in CBSE Board

Last year, in the schools started by the Municipal Corporation under other boards, a total of 10,372 students enrolled in CBSE schools from nursery to class six. In ICSE schools, 230 students enrolled in the nursery, 78 in the IB schools’ nursery, and 177 students in IGCSE schools’ nursery. In total, 10,807 students enrolled in these schools last year. Kankal also mentioned that the online registration process this year will likely receive a good response, and the final enrollment numbers will be clear after January 15, 2025.
