Pune:-17th December 2024: In a determined effort to improve road safety, Pune traffic police have penalized over one lakh motorists and filed FIRs against 100 individuals for wrong-side driving in the past two and a half months. This crackdown aims to curb the hazardous practice, which endangers other road users and disrupts traffic flow.
“Driving on the wrong side is a significant issue in Pune. It not only endangers lives but also creates chaos on the roads,” said Manoj Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police, Pune Traffic. “After drunk driving, it is one of the most dangerous violations we face on our roads. This strict action is essential to prevent accidents and ensure discipline among motorists.”
Traffic officers have been deployed across city roads and highways, particularly during peak hours, to monitor and penalize violators. “Wrong-side driving causes severe inconvenience during rush hours, leading to traffic jams and frustration among commuters,” said Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. He emphasized that the campaign against wrong-side driving will remain ongoing. “This practice poses a significant threat to commuters. Our goal is to prevent accidents and fatalities by enforcing the rules.”
According to traffic officials, wrong-side driving is rampant across Pune, involving both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. “It’s not limited to just one type of vehicle; even car drivers are guilty of breaking this rule,” Patil added. The penalty for wrong-side driving is Rs 500. However, in cases where offenders refuse to cooperate or argue with officers, police file FIRs for rash and negligent driving under relevant sections.
Explaining the legal process, Patil said, “If someone does not follow the rules and argues with our personnel, we register an FIR. The local police station then prepares a chargesheet, ensuring the motorist faces the consequences of their actions.”
Local residents have welcomed the police action but have called for consistency in enforcement. “The police usually act for a few days, but once the crackdown stops, the violations return. This lack of continuity allows the problem to persist,” said Nivedita Moghe, a resident of Dhankawadi. “We also need greater civic awareness among citizens. Following traffic rules is not just about avoiding fines but ensuring everyone’s safety.”
Traffic personnel from all divisions have been actively monitoring wrong-side driving during morning and evening hours when violations are most prevalent. The police believe that sustained efforts will lead to safer roads in the city.
“We hope this initiative will not only reduce the nuisance but also instill a sense of responsibility among motorists,” Patil concluded.
The campaign marks a critical step in Pune’s ongoing battle against road rule violations and aims to foster a culture of safe and responsible driving.
