Mumbai: Voting is taking place today for the election of 10 seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council. BJP has fielded 5 candidates in this election. Pravin Darekar, Ram Shinde, Uma Khapre, Shrikant Bharatiya, Prasad Lad are contesting the assembly elections. Shiv Sena has fielded Sachin Ahir, Amashya Padvi, NCP has fielded Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, Eknath Khadse, Congress has fielded Bhai Jagtap and Chandrakant Handore. Eleven candidates are in the fray for 10 seats in the Legislative Council. Due to this, even one vote has gained importance for the Legislative Council. The Mumbai High Court had refused to allow NCP ministers Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh to cast their votes. Now it is known that Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh have run in the Supreme Court.
Anil Deshmukh, Nawab Malik’s run in the Supreme Court
Anil Deshmukh is currently in ED custody on money laundering charges. So, Minister Nawab Malik is also in ED custody. The petition of Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh was moved for immediate hearing before a bench of the Supreme Court. However, the bench held that the petition should be heard before the Chief Justice.
Afternoon hearing in the Supreme Court
Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Malik’s application may be heard at 2 pm today. Even if the result is in favor of Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh, it is doubtful whether Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh will reach the polls by 4 pm after the completion of the next process.
Nationalist hopes remain
NCP has nominated Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar and Eknath Khadse for the Legislative Council. The NCP has a strength of 53 in the Assembly. However, after the Mumbai High Court denied permission to Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh, the NCP has a strength of 51 MLAs. Therefore, efforts are being made to get Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh allowed to vote.
