Devendra Fadnavis resignation : Congress says ‘it’s a slap in the face to masters in Delhi’

Mumbai:  Shortly after Devendra Fadnavis tendered his resignation as Maharashtra chief minister, the Congress party, on Tuesday, said that the decision was a “slap in the faces of their masters sitting in Delhi”.

In yet another surprising move, Fadnavis on Tuesday stepped down as Maharashtra CM, over three days after taking oath along with his deputy Ajit Pawar in a hush-hush ceremony. Ajit Pawar also quit as the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra.

Fadnavis, at a press conference in the afternoon, announced he would tender his resignation to Governor BS Koshyari since the BJP does not have the required numbers to prove majority on the floor of the Maharashtra Assembly.

Commenting on the development, senior Congress leader KC Venugopal said that the move is a victory of constitutional democracy.

“This is a victory of constitutional democracy. They thought through horse-trading they can make the government. This is not only a failure of Devendra Fadnavis but also a slap in faces of their masters sitting in Delhi,” Venugopal added.

He further said that Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP will hold a meeting to elect the leader of the joint legislature party in the evening. “I think Uddhav ji will be elected,” he added.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala also slammed the BJP and said that the lack of majority of “those who kidnapped the people’s mandate” has been exposed.

“Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar should apologise to the people of Maharashtra. His government was based on lies and defection that fell like a house of cards,” he added.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court, ruling on a joint petition of the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress, ordered that a floor test must be held by 5 pm Wednesday. The court had further said that the trust vote be held through an open ballot system, with proceedings of the Assembly broadcast live.
